The Truth About Oxo-Degradable Plastics

BRIEF:

Upac believes in sustainable packaging solutions – ones that are better for customers and the environment. That’s why every DURAPLAS bags is free from oxo-degradable additives and is instead 100% recyclable. Other manufacturers may combine oxo-degradable additives with traditional plastics to boost the ‘oxo-degradability’ of plastic bags, but they can be harmful as they cause the plastics to break down into microplastics/smaller fragments which are harmful to the environment.

Oxo-degradable plastic fragments are especially harmful to aquatic life when they enter waterways such as oceans. Oxo-degradable bags may sound like they are compostable, however they do not completely decompose – and do not meet internationally recognised standards for compostability and biodegradability.

You can trust that DURAPLAS bags are free of oxo-degradable additives and will be suitable for use in the months and years ahead. A number of large national groups have already pre-emptively banned any plastic products containing oxo-degradable additives ahead of upcoming legislative changes.

The time is now to switch to DURAPLAS recyclable plastic bags. The Single-use and Other Plastic Products (Waste Avoidance) Act 2020 (the Act) is due to commence in South Australia in March, with other Australian States and Territories and New Zealand expected to ban the use of oxo-degradable plastics starting with the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) from July 2022).

DURAPLAS plastic bags are 100% recyclable via the REDcycle program. Not only are DURAPLAS bags food safe and HACPP Accredited, the bags recycled through the REDcycle program are completely removed from the waste system. There is no chance of the bags entering the environment or degrading into harmful microplastics when they are recycled. The bags become agricultural products, council garbage bins, outdoor benches and play equipment, wheel stops, and even road base. One great example is that in the 12 months to June 2021 9 tonnes of soft plastic (over two million plastic bags) were repurposed into road base in the Hume City Council local government area. REDcycle has also introduced a new agricultural grade, steel reinforced fence post making use of post-agricultural and post-industrial soft plastics.

DURAPLAS bags feature easy to recognise recycling symbols printed on all bags to help customers recycle them responsibly. The symbols are designed to be easily recognisable. The logos provide customers with all the information they need at a glance to make the right recycling choice. The symbol helps reduces the chance that DURAPLAS bags will end up in landfill.
