Research has made us more aware than ever about the effect that chemicals can have on our bodies. From childrens bottles, to sandwich bags, to plastic wrap; food safe plastics have never been a bigger issue.

The two primary concerns most people hold are the chemicals bisphenol A (BPA), phthalates and epoxidised soybean oil (ESBO). These can be found in polycarbonate food containers and PVC based drink bottles for example. These are reported to be endocrine disruptors (BPA and phthalates) which can be particularly harmful to babies and children – or potential toxins (ESBO). The safe levels of these compounds is still being researched, however it is clear that BPA and phthalates have the potential to permanently affect the growth and development of children.

There good news is that there are food safe plastic alternatives to polycarbonate and PVC. Some food safe plastics include:

• Polyethylene terephthalate (PET): soft drink bottles and lightweight plastic jars.
• High density polyethylene (HDPE): Milk bottles and yoghurt containers.
• Low density polyethylene (LDPE): Takeaway food containers and plastic food wrap.
• Polypropylene (PP): Butter and margarine containers.
